Worried About Your Child's Speech or Language?

Many parents come to me feeling helpless. They notice something isn't quite right but don't know where to turn.

NHS waiting lists can be 8-10 months for therapy and 3-4 months just for an initial assessment. That's a long time when you're worried. And for a three-year-old, it's a third of their entire life.

"My child isn't talking as much as other kids their age"

"I can't understand what my child is saying"

"My child doesn't seem to listen or respond to their name"

"They get so frustrated when they can't communicate"

"They don't seem interested in playing with other children"

"I don't know if this is normal or if I should be worried"

"Am I doing something wrong? Did we cause this?"

If any of this sounds familiar, you're not alone. And you're not doing anything wrong. Early support can make a huge difference, and that's exactly what I'm here to provide.

When Should You Seek Speech Therapy?

Every child develops at their own pace, but there are some signs that suggest your child might benefit from professional support.

12-18 months

  • First words should be emerging (e.g. "mama", "dada", familiar words)
  • Understands more than they can say
  • If very few or no words by 18 months, this is worth monitoring

2-2.5 years

  • Should have a growing vocabulary of single words
  • Starting to put two words together (e.g. "more juice", "mummy help", "red car")
  • If very limited words or no combinations, review with a professional

3 years

  • Should be using 3+ word phrases
  • Mostly understood by familiar adults
  • If they are difficult to understand or still using single words, seek support

4-5 years

  • Should start to use full sentences and conversation
  • Mostly understood by unfamiliar adults
  • Some later sounds may still be developing (e.g. "r", "th")
  • If speech is still unclear or sentences are limited, seek advice

Red Flags for Social Communication

Potential indicators that may warrant further assessment

Doesn't look at you or make eye contact
Doesn't respond to their name
Has significant difficulty with changes to routine
Very repetitive play patterns (lining up toys, same activity over and over)
Not interested in other children
Gets upset when you try to join their play
Prefers to play alone

I'm Nina, a UK-trained and HCPC-registered Speech and Language Therapist with years of NHS experience helping children find their voice.

I've worked with hundreds of children, from toddlers just starting to make sounds to school-age children working on clearer speech. My experience spans early years settings (ages 2-4) and primary schools, which means I understand both where your child is now and what they'll need to succeed as they grow.

Why I started Two Golden Words

Honestly? Because the NHS system, while wonderful, has limitations that frustrated me. I watched families wait 8-10 months for therapy while their children struggled. I saw parents desperate for help but limited to just a few sessions before being discharged. I knew I could do better.

A personal connection

I actually had speech therapy myself as a child. I know what it's like to need that support, and I know how much it can help. That personal experience drives everything I do.

My expertise includes:

Language delay and late talkingSpeech sound disorders (pronunciation difficulties)Social communication difficulties and autism supportStammeringParent coaching and trainingMakaton signingAlternative communication methods (picture boards, visual systems)

How therapy works

For young children (under 3-4), I primarily work through you, the parent. I'll teach you exactly what to do during our sessions, and you'll practice at home. For older children with good attention spans, I can work directly with your child online while you observe and learn.

The magic isn't just in our sessions. It's in what happens at home between sessions. That's why parent coaching is at the heart of everything I do.

How It Works

Why Online Therapy Works

"But can speech therapy really work online?"

Online therapy session with therapist and child on laptop at home

I understand the hesitation. I had it too before I saw how well it works. Here's why families love online sessions:

No Travel Stress

No rushing across town, no finding parking, no dragging other children along. Connect from your living room, your office lunch break, or wherever works for you.

Familiar Environment

Many children, especially those with autism or anxiety, get distressed in unfamiliar clinical settings. At home, they're relaxed and can show me their true abilities.

More Flexibility

Early morning before nursery? During nap time for siblings? After school? We'll find times that fit your life.

Parents Learn Too

You'll watch and learn alongside your child. By the end of our sessions, you'll have the skills to continue the work every single day.

Start Immediately

No 8-month waiting lists. Book today and we can get started as soon as this week.

Consistency

Bad weather? Mild sniffles? A sibling's school play? Online sessions mean fewer cancellations and more consistent progress.

Important note

Online therapy works brilliantly for parent coaching, assessments, and direct therapy with children who can attend to a screen. For very young children (under 2-3), I primarily work through parents, which is actually more effective anyway, since you're with your child all day, every day!

Real Progress, Real Families

Max's Story

*Name changed for privacy

When I first met Max, he was four years old and had been waiting nine months for therapy after his initial NHS assessment. His mum was worried about his pronunciation, but when I assessed him, I found significant needs in both speech and language.

Max was using lots of gestures to communicate because he simply didn't have the words. He could say a few single words, but half of them were hard to understand. At four years old, that's concerning.

We had four weekly therapy sessions together, focusing first on building his vocabulary (because if you don't have the words, it doesn't matter how you pronounce them). We used vocabulary games, special time strategies, and I coached his mum on exactly what to do at home.

After just a few weeks of practice, Max came back for a review assessment. The difference was remarkable:

The Results

  • 1Many more words in his vocabulary
  • 2Far fewer gestures because he didn't need them anymore
  • 3Words were becoming clearer and easier to understand
  • 4His mum said he was "so much less frustrated"
  • 5He scored significantly better on the same assessments

"Nina made us feel so supported from our very first call. She explained everything clearly and gave us practical things we could do straight away. The progress has been amazing."

Parent of a 3-year-old

"We were so worried about our daughter's speech. Nina was reassuring, professional, and gave us exactly the guidance we needed. I wish we'd found her sooner."

Free Strategy

Start Helping Your Child Today, For Free

While you're deciding whether therapy is right for your family, here's one powerful strategy you can start using immediately. It's called 'Special Time' and it's one of the first things I teach every parent.

Set aside 10-15 minutes each day for one-on-one play with your child

The rules:

Turn off the TV and put away phones

Get down on the floor at their level

Let them choose what to play with

Follow their lead completely, don't suggest activities

Copy what they're doing

Don't ask questions or give instructions

Simply narrate in simple words: "car goes fast", "red block", "ball rolling"

Why it works:

This removes all pressure to perform. Your child leads, so they're engaged. You're modelling simple language at their level. You're building shared attention, which is the foundation of all communication.

Try it for a week and see what happens.

You're Not Alone in This

I know how hard it is to watch your child struggle to communicate. The frustration, the worry, the endless googling at 2am. I've been there, both as a professional helping hundreds of families, and personally as someone who needed speech therapy as a child.

You haven't done anything wrong. You haven't caused this. And the fact that you're here, looking for help, shows what a wonderful parent you are.

Let's work together to help your child find their voice.
